Fabric and Me

A match made in Heaven.
I wrote this as a "Comment" on one of my postings instead of posting it directly as a blog, so I will repeat it here:
When I was in Junior High School and High School, the Macy's store in New York City was a mecca for fabric.  Half of the 6th floor was FILLED with fabric.  I used to spend hours there reveling in the prints and textures and colors.  I remember being particularly attracted to striped "wallpaper" patterns.   There was so much beauty I would be filled with excitement.
I remember only one ugly fabric.  It was a sickly pale yellow with huge life-size grey telephones all over it. It was there so long it was dusty.
Macy's no longer has this fabric department.  What a shame.  I wish I could go back.....

Method of Creating the Doll

First I make the skirt with designer cotton fabrics.  Then I cut, stitch and stuffthe body.  I sew the skirt to the body, tie on the matching kerchief and stitch it on.  Then I make and stitch on the 4 arms.  The blouse, sometimes feathery, goes on next.  If there are buttons, I glue them on.  Lastly, I paint the faces.
Sometimes I do this in an assembly line style, but sometimes, such as for specialty orders, I just make the one that has been requested.

My dolls are teaching the concept of love

My Topsy Turvy Dolls are sad on one side because they lack love and attention.
They are begging for a hug.  They encourage hugs.
So give the doll a hug, flip it over and VOILA!  She is smiling.

This is a lesson in nurturing.

The dolls are also attracting hugs by their softness, their OOH LA LA! feathers, their fragility.

Teachers are buying them for their classrooms.
Even little boys are playing with them, flipping them back and forth.
